Our business is about giving back: giving back to the proud people of Mexico by showcasing the talent and craftsmanship of indigenous artwork, providing a perspective and voice to those artists and above all, paying fair wages.
Having spent a large part of my life in Mexico, many of its special places feel like home to me. After I began doing business here, I knew that there was more we could do directly with the people I began to have connections with. So, 'The LEARN Project,' was born.
It's simple, really. The list of wonderful communities we began learning about kept growing. We learned about specific needs of people and children, and then the best methods to support those needs, all the while... continuing to listen and learn. Being a mother and knowing the importance of early education for children, their need was an important focus. Education is where I wanted to make an impact.
But what is the best way to help? That's the question we've been trying to understand since the day we launched Lola y Tula, and we've learned a lot. We've learned about zoning on school grounds. We learned whether technology is accessible or valuable in rural areas. We've learned about micro-finance programs targeted to women in Latin countries. And we've also learned a great deal about inspiring organizations already doing grassroots work to support these endeavors.
Every season Lola y Tula will select a community of people for whom to raise funds to donate directly. Our focus will be on education. Education can come in many forms: Whether we are crowd-funding to procure musical instruments for school children or English classes for women wanting to do better business as weavers in Oaxaca. We will tell their specific stories here and with your purchases, you will know exactly how your money contributes to these worthy goals.
We are thrilled to be a part of the growing movement to be a 'mindful' business.
We believe that business and commerce can be compassionate, especially when many of our products come from people and places that are vulnerable.
We encourage you to remember the power you have as consumers to purchase with purpose.
We promise to conduct our business with integrity, dignity and a sense of responsibility to the beautiful communities with whom we work in our beloved Mexico.
CURRENT OUTREACH FOR THE LEARN PROJECT:
COLLEGIO PATRIA // CHACALA, NAYARIT
OBJECTIVE: RAISE FUNDS FOR AN OUTDOOR PLAY STRUCTURE IN A SMALL RURAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
PURPOSE: PLAY ALLOWS CHILDREN TO USE THEIR CREATIVITY WHILE DEVELOPING THEIR IMAGINATION, DEXTERITY, AND PHYSICAL, COGNITIVE, AND EMOTIONAL STRENGTH. PLAY IS IMPORTANT TO HEALTHY BRAIN DEVELOPMENT. IT IS THROUGH PLAY THAT CHILDREN LEARN AT A VERY EARLY AGE ABOUT HOW TO ENGAGE AND INTERACT WITH THE WORLD AROUND THEM. CURRENTLY, THE SCHOOL HAS A SMALL CONCRETE AREA WITH TWO SWINGS. A TYPE OF CLIMBING STRUCTURE WOULD ENHANCE THE SPACE DRAMATICALLY, GIVING A MUCH NEEDED RESOURCE TO THE TEACHERS AND STUDENTS.
MISSION: 10% OF ALL PURCHASES MADE THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER (JUNE, JULY & AUGUST 2017) AT LOLA Y TULA WILL BE DONATED TO COLLEGIO PATRIA SPECIFICALLY FOR THE GOAL OF PROVIDING ENHANCED PLAYING STRUCTURES.
